Plant cell growth has been studied in detail using physiological, biochemical and genetic approaches. Data on the mechanical aspects of cell expansion, however, are rather sparse and mainly qualitative. For a better understanding of the biophysical properties of cell growth it is important to gain quantitative information about the cell wall, a rigid structure whose mechanical properties have to be modified to allow cell expansion. We use lily (Lilium longiflorum) and Arabidopsis pollen tubes as model-systems for tip growing cells in order to test a micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS)-based approach that allows to specifically measure mechanical cell wall properties under different physiological conditions. The data will be incorporated into mathematical growth models, which can be tested and refined by inducing similar changes in silico.
